Joint Pain

If life has just stopped being fun for you due to joint pains caused by some cartilage breakdown or as a side effect of some autoimmune disease, you need not fear any further. Studies have shown that with a good exercise regime, physical therapy sessions and change in lifestyle, you can get back to your jumping frolicking days all over again!
Exercise Regime:
Research studies published in the September 2008 issue of BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders shows that basic self-management programs including exercises have helped patients suffering from Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee to get considerable relief from their pain. Similarly water-based therapies for OA patients above the age of 60 years showed significant reduction in joint pains around their hip and knee regions and eventually also enabled them to improve their physical activities.
Another study by American Council on Exercise (ACE) shows that functional strength training can help you gain better relief for your joint pains as compared to conventional weight lifting which includes balanced exercises of strength and endurance to help you carry out your mundane activities without suffering any more pain. To reduce inflammation of the joints you can use gentle rhythmic active range of motion (AROM) exercises like swimming, stationary bicycles, or even yoga. This will help you to glide the surfaces of your joints in a way that will prevent any excessive pressure being developed on them and yet help you with the motion as well. Bicycling or leg lifts are the best way to deal with weight bearing joint problems in your knee.
Physical Therapy Sessions:
Another study published in the September 2008 issue of New England Journal of Medicine shows that when patients suffering from moderate to severe cases of OA of the knee who underwent surgery were compared with those who only took physical and medical therapies, the difference was not significant. This proves that physical therapy sessions can in fact help you to avoid surgeries. This therapy can be performed in two ways – either it could include soft tissue massage and joint mobilization or passive movement of the joints by a physical therapist. Either way will help you to considerably get rid of the pain and for additional help you could also choose other physical therapy treatments like ice, ultrasound or electrical simulation as well.
Changes in your Lifestyle:
Losing even a pound of your weight can help you decrease the impact of OA on your knees. Add one pound to your weight and in fact it would mean four pounds added on across your knees. You need to adapt some changes in your daily food pattern so that you are able to shed off some pounds, preferably five to ten pounds at least. If you maintain a healthy weight, this will help you to balance your muscle strength around the hips, legs and feet as well.
With good use of physical training and therapy sessions as well as by incorporating simple changes into your lifestyle, you can avoid surgery for OA and get rid of the pain in a more effective way!
